Below, we’ll take a closer look at Tilia cordata ‘Böhlje’. The tree grows slowly and develops a compact, conical crown when young. As it matures, the tree takes on a broader conical crown shape. Under good growing conditions, this cultivar remains free of aphids, making it suitable for planting along streets.
In June and July, yellowish flowers with a strong, sweet scent appear, clustered in short panicles. In August and September, the fruit appears in the form of round, brown, felt-like nuts. The leaves of this cultivar are strikingly small for a linden tree. They are 3 to 6 cm in diameter and nearly round in shape. In the fall, the small leaves turn a yellowish color.
It is a cultivar of Tilia cordata that was discovered as a seedling. The tree was introduced to the market by Baumschule Böhlje in Westerstede (Germany). It is a reliable linden tree for use in public spaces; the tree certainly deserves a little more attention.
