Pinus nigra nigra

Below, we’ll focus on Pinus nigra nigra, the Austrian pine. Because this conifer doesn’t grow very quickly, its size remains limited in the early years. Eventually, the tree can reach a height of up to 20 meters. The pine tolerates topiary pruning well and, under these conditions, can be used in areas where space is limited. The most ideal locations are likely in parks, on green belts, or as landscape plantings.

Pinus nigra nigra is a highly ornamental pine with beautiful, bright-green needles that grow in pairs. The oval, pointed cones are light brown (5–8 cm long) and appear on the tree as it matures. The grooved trunk really comes into its own as the tree matures. We grow this conifer as a feathery shrub and as a standard tree at our nursery.

This species is also well-suited for use in coastal areas and looks particularly good at the Deltapark on the island of Neeltje Jans in Zeeland, among other places. The tree is ideal for planting in the dunes to help stabilize the sand.
The Austrian pine, also known as the black pine, is native to Central and Southeastern Europe: Austria, Central Italy, the Balkans, and Turkey.
