Sycoparrotia semidecidua I Multi-stem

Category:

We’re focusing on a less commonly used tree or shrub, *Sycoparrotia semidecidua*. This cultivar is certainly suitable for planting in gardens, parks, and green belts. The shrub can eventually grow to a height of 5 to 7 meters, but its growth is relatively slow. With proper pruning, the shrub can be easily maintained in the desired shape. This cultivar is naturally healthy but does require good soil conditions.

Its greatest ornamental value likely lies in its glossy, dark green leaves, which have a somewhat leathery texture. During most winters, the shrub retains almost all of its foliage, and the leaves slowly change color to predominantly yellow and sometimes red hues.
You could say that the tree is semi-evergreen; the species name *semidecidua* also refers to this. After the leaves fall, the trees bloom on the bare wood in very early spring. The inflorescence features orange to red stamens with pale yellow pollen at their tips. The inflorescence is enveloped by brown petals. After flowering, the glossy foliage begins to sprout again, ensuring that the tree provides ornamental value year-round.

x Sycoparrotia semidecidua was developed by crossing the evergreen Sycopsis sinensis with the deciduous Parrotia persica. The cultivar was developed around 1950 in the Swiss city of Basel. We grow this cultivar in both tree and shrub forms at our nursery.
