SKAL-CERTIFIED AREA
A pioneer in sustainable farming for over 25 years
For more than 25 years, we have been pioneers in making our nursery more sustainable. This led to PlanetProof certification for the entire nursery in 2008.
The transition to growing organic trees was a logical next step for us. Today, the vast majority of our new street tree plantings consist of SKAL-certified trees. As a result, our selection of SKAL trees grows every year.
Here's How We Grow Organic Trees
As # Environmental Stewards, we grow trees that contribute to a healthy living environment, while respecting the natural surroundings of our nursery. We work in harmony with natural processes and do not use artificial fertilizers or synthetic chemical pesticides in our organic cultivation practices.
Solid manure, cover crops, and leaf mulch improve soil structure and stimulate soil life. Leaf mulch also reduces evaporation, meaning young plantings require less irrigation. Wooded hedgerows and biodiverse herb mixtures provide habitat for natural pest control agents, while organic leaf fertilizers support the resilience of our trees. We control weeds mechanically.
Natural Pest Control and Biodiversity
Wooded hedgerows have been planted in and around the nursery, providing a habitat for natural pest controllers. This ensures they are always nearby to help control pests. Nesting boxes on the plots also attract titmice, which feed on the insects in the nursery.
SKAL-certified, from cultivation to delivery
In addition to its nursery, Boomkwekerij M. van den Oever holds a SKAL certificate for the sale of SKAL-certified products. As a full-service supplier, this enables us to fulfill complete organic-certified orders featuring organic trees, shrubs, hedge plants, and perennials.
SKAL conducts an annual audit of our organic farming, trade, and logistics practices. This ensures that our organic products demonstrably meet the applicable certification requirements.
