Under favorable conditions, Acer pseudoplatanus can grow very large and live for hundreds of years. Acer pseudoplatanus occurs naturally in the deciduous forests, thickets, and dunes of the Netherlands.
The tree is easily recognizable by its palmately veined, five-lobed leaves, which are dark green in color. The inflorescence consists of hanging clusters of light green flowers that emerge from the tips of the twigs. The trees bloom after the leaves have sprouted. Like all maples, this species has winged fruits that grow in pairs.
The leaf buds of Acer pseudoplatanus are green, while those of Acer platanoides are red. Another important difference is that the petiole of Acer pseudoplatanus does not contain latex, whereas that of Acer platanoides does. This distinction allows these two tree species to be distinguished from one another.
A multi-stemmed Acer pseudoplatus is suitable for use as a landscape plant.
