We’ll take a closer look at Acer rubrum ‘Fairview Flame’, a synonym for Acer rubrum ‘Austep’. This tree belongs to the group of Canadian maples.
When young, this tree forms a relatively narrow pyramidal crown; as it matures, the crown becomes noticeably wider and develops an oval shape. The tree’s final height is 10 to 12 meters. Due to its somewhat erratic crown development, the tree seems to look best in a green space or in a park. It is a relatively new cultivar, so it is difficult to say whether it is truly a reliable street tree.
In the spring, before the leaves emerge, red flowers appear in small clusters. The five-lobed leaves are probably the tree’s most striking feature. During the summer, the leaves are a bright green and blue-green on the underside. The fall color is truly beautiful to behold. In the fall, the leaves of the ‘Fairview Flame’ turn beautiful shades of orange-red to dark red. However, the tree does lose its leaves relatively quickly in the fall.
