Below, we’ll take a closer look at Acer saccharinum ‘Floriade 2012’. This beautifully upright tree has a narrow, pyramidal crown when young; later, the crown becomes noticeably wider and more egg-shaped. The even crown development is a reliable characteristic of this cultivar. It reaches a final height of 10 to 12 meters.
This tree is suitable for planting in a park or along a greenbelt. This cultivar has few soil requirements. It is best not to plant the tree in an exposed, windy location to prevent branches from breaking.
This cultivar has light green, deeply lobed leaves that are very ornamental. The undersides of the leaves have a beautiful silvery-white color. In the fall, the leaves take on a beautiful yellow hue. Another striking feature is the silvery-gray, smooth bark.
The mother tree stands near the police station in Schijndel. Around 2008, as the M. van den Oever tree nursery, we took cuttings from this tree, and we began growing the first seedlings ourselves as a business. The first specimen was planted at the Floriade in Venlo. There, this cultivar was officially named by the KVBC and included in the ‘list of woody plants.’ A precise description of all its characteristics will likely not be available for several years, as it is a relatively new cultivar. There are also a number of older specimens in Sint-Oedenrode.
