Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’ starts out as a shrub and grows into an elegant, medium-sized tree. It grows slowly, and it takes quite a long time before it develops into a true tree shape.
The leaf is deeply lobed, and the lobes, which have smooth margins, are linear in shape. In the fall, it remains on the tree for a long time. The stalked buds and young leaves feel sticky (glutinosa = sticky).
The tree has an attractive growth habit with drooping twigs.
