Below, we’ll take a closer look at a new cultivar in our assortment, Carpinus betulus ‘Orange Retz’. When young, the tree grows compactly and upright with a narrow oval shape. The tree grows relatively slowly for a hornbeam but can eventually reach a height of 5 to 6 meters. As it matures, the tree does spread out noticeably; however, only time will tell how much it will actually spread. In any case, it is an ornamental tree well-suited for planting along a greenbelt or in a park.
In the spring, the leaves emerge bronze-colored; in the summer, they turn a fresh green. The name refers to the beautiful orange fall coloration, which is truly stunning. The leaves are narrow and oval-shaped with a double-serrated edge, and they remain relatively small.
In April and May, the tree blooms with male and female yellow catkins. The fruit consists of nuts that hang together in clusters. Each nut is surrounded by a bract. Even the bracts turn orange in the fall.
This cultivar was selected by Jean Blondeau in the year 2000. The tree was subsequently put into production by the tree nursery ‘Minier’ in Beaufort-en-Anjou, France.
