Below, we describe Prunus avium ‘Plena’. The tree forms a broad pyramidal crown, which takes on a more oval shape as it matures. It eventually reaches a height of 11 to 15 meters.
This cultivar is suitable for planting along wider streets, on medians, or in parks. It is a high-quality tree that is also frequently used in landscaping; moreover, it is a good nectar source for bees. This cultivar is less susceptible to leaf diseases and gummosis than the species.
The green, serrated, oval-shaped leaves with a pointed tip are characteristic of this cultivar. In the fall, it displays an ornamental yellow-orange to red fall color. This ornamental cherry blooms in late April with double, snow-white flowers. The ornamental cherry can also be recognized by its glossy brown-red bark with lenticels, which is somewhat similar to the trunks of trees bearing edible cherries.
The tree was discovered in France around 1700.
