Quercus xhispanica ‘Wageningen’

Below, we describe Quercus hispanica ‘Wageningen’. The tree forms a fairly compact, broad conical crown. Later, it develops a more open, rounded crown shape. This cultivar can eventually reach a height of 8 to 12 meters, but its growth is slow. In any case, the tree is well-suited for planting in green belts or parks. In streets, the tree can be used with the help of corrective pruning.

Its most distinctive feature is its semi-evergreen to evergreen nature. During mild winters, the trees remain green. If the leaves change color due to frost, they remain on the trees until spring. In our climate, this cultivar has proven to be quite hardy.

This cultivar is a hybrid of Quercus cerris (Turkey oak) and the Mediterranean Quercus suber (cork oak). It is a Naktuinbouw selection discovered in Wageningen in 1979. The cultivar is still rarely used in practice.
