Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Bessoniana’ is an upright-growing tree that forms a strikingly dense crown. This cultivar retains a beautiful pyramidal crown shape for a long time; as it matures, however, the crown becomes broader, more oval, and slightly more irregular in shape.
Its most striking ornamental feature is likely its compound leaves, which have a fresh, bright green color. The compound leaves can grow to be 20 to 30 cm long.
The combination of its ornamental leaves and its beautiful, dense crown adds value. Unlike the species, this cultivar is thornless.
This is likely one of the most versatile Robinia cultivars due to its vigorous growth habit and attractive pyramidal crown shape. The tree is therefore well-suited for planting along wider residential streets, possibly with a small green strip. This Robinia does not grow very quickly but can eventually reach a height of 15 to 20 meters. The tree is therefore also well-suited for planting along a green strip or in a park.
Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Bessoniana’ is an old German variety selected by Baumschule Laurentius near Leipzig; it was selected from a batch of seedlings in 1859.
