Tilia platyphyllos ‘Delft’

Below, we’ll take a closer look at Tilia platyphyllos ‘Delft’. In its early years, this tree grows with a narrow, conical crown. This slow-growing tree eventually broadens, forming a conical to ovoid crown. In a suitable location, the tree can eventually reach a height of 15 to 25 meters.

These specific characteristics make the tree suitable for planting along green belts or in parks. It’s also a great choice for planting along wider streets. It’s a very healthy tree that’s virtually immune to spider mites, leaf miners, and aphids. As a result, the tree doesn’t drip.

Its greatest ornamental value likely lies in its bright green, heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges. The tree blooms from June through July, producing yellowish-white flowers in pendulous clusters of 3 to 5 flowers on a stalked bract. It is a good nectar source for bees. Later, an inverted-ovoid nut about 1 cm in diameter appears, covered with gray, felt-like hairs.

This linden tree was selected in Delft around 1950 by Alphons van der Bom of Oudenbosch. The tree was named in 1957 and first introduced to the market.
