Ulmus ‘Dodoens’ grows somewhat more upright and narrow in its early years, with a conical crown. As it matures, the tree becomes somewhat wider, taking on a more oval shape. It is a relatively fast-growing tree that can eventually reach a height of 15 to 18 meters and a width of 5 to 6 meters.
These specific characteristics certainly make the tree suitable for planting along green belts or in parks. It is also a beautiful cultivar for use along avenues and streets with a slightly wider profile. It is certainly a good tree for the polder landscape in the western Netherlands, as it tolerates (sea) winds well.
The fresh green leaves are probably the tree’s most attractive feature. They are oval-shaped with serrated edges and the characteristic slanted base typical of the elm. The leaf surface is smooth and glossy dark green.
This cultivar was developed in 1973 by what was then the ‘De Dorschkamp’ Experimental Garden in Wageningen, which is now part of Wageningen University. The tree is named after the physician and botanist Rembert Dodoens (1516–1586).
