Ulmus ‘Frontier’

Below, we’ll take a closer look at a less commonly grown elm, Ulmus ‘Frontier’. During October, November, and December, the tree often displays beautiful green and red fall colors.

Ulmus ‘Frontier’ is a hybrid of Ulmus minor and Ulmus parviflora. The tree was introduced in 1990 by the United States National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Unlike other elm species, this tree grows remarkably slowly. It has a somewhat open crown and eventually reaches a height of 6 to 10 meters. It has an upright growth habit, and with light shaping pruning, the tree is easy to maintain. We deliberately cultivate this tree at our nursery.
