Carpinus betulus ‘Orange Retz’

DCarpinus betulus ‘Orange Retz’ is a new addition to our selection. It is compact and has beautiful fall colors. A stunning specimen tree.

This cultivar was selected before 2000 by Jean Blondeau of the Minier Nursery in France. The variety stands out for its compact growth when young and its striking, fiery orange fall color.

Features

The tree grows in a compact, upright manner. A mature specimen has a broad, oval-round crown. After 10 years, the tree reaches a height of about 6 meters and is usually about the same width. In its early years, the tree grows compactly and in a straight, upright manner, with a narrow oval shape.

Carpinus betulus ‘Orange Retz’ prefers a location in full sun or partial shade. It is not particularly demanding when it comes to soil type, although moist, loamy, well-drained soil is preferred.

In the spring, the leaves emerge bronze-colored. They turn bright green and then orange in the fall. The leaves are oval-shaped and have a double-serrated edge. The tree is deciduous.

In April/May, the tree blooms with male and female yellow catkins. The blooms are inconspicuous. However, the fruit, on the other hand, is highly ornamental. The nuts hang together in a cluster. Each nut is surrounded by a bract. In this cultivar, the bract also turns orange in the fall.

Due to its compact growth habit, it is suitable for smaller spaces in public green areas and gardens. However, keep in mind that, without pruning, the tree will grow into a nearly round crown.
We therefore recommend planting this tree in larger modern or landscape gardens and as a specimen tree in public green spaces. If maintenance pruning is not an issue, the possibilities for its use are endless.
